What This Unit Does

The VT501 is a decentralised, single-room heat recovery ventilator. It continuously extracts stale indoor air, recovers thermal energy through a ceramic heat exchanger, and supplies filtered fresh air — all through a single 160mm wall penetration. In winter, it pre-warms incoming air. In summer, it pre-cools it. The two air streams never mix. Result: stable room temperature, reduced HVAC runtime, and measurable energy savings.

No ductwork. No ceiling void required. One unit ventilates one room.

Air Quality You Can Monitor & Control

  • VT501-WiFi: Connects to the Tuya Smart app. Monitor real-time CO₂, set ventilation schedules, and automate airflow based on room conditions.
  • VT501-Remote: Includes an intuitive IR remote for instant speed and mode selection.
Both models offer three operating modes: Fresh Air IntakeExhaust, and 65s Heat Recovery Cycle.

Installation Without Renovation
Designed for retrofit and new builds. Requires only one Ø163 mm core drill through an exterior wall. The telescopic duct adjusts to wall thicknesses from 200 mm to 500 mm. No ceiling voids, no duct runs, no specialist HVAC contractor required. Mount, connect, and ventilate.

Installation Requirements

What you need:

  • One 160mm core drill hole through an exterior wall
  • Standard electrical outlet within cable reach
  • Wall thickness between 200mm and 450mm

What you don’t need:

  • Ceiling voids or suspended ceilings
  • Ductwork through the building
  • Professional HVAC contractor (though professional installation is always recommended for masonry/concrete walls)

Installation Steps

text1. Core drill a 163mm hole through the exterior wall
(slight downward angle of 2-3° toward outside for condensate drainage)
2. Insert the telescopic duct tube (cut to match your wall thickness)
3. Secure the exterior weather grille
4. Mount the interior unit onto the wall bracket
5. Connect to power (standard plug — no hardwiring required)
6. Attach filters and interior cover

Typical installation time: 2 – 4 hours for one unit.

Note for renters: The 160mm wall penetration is the only structural modification required. Discuss with your landlord before installation.

Real-World Impact: What European Customers Experience

Scenario 1 — A Berlin Apartment in August:
A young couple lives in a top-floor apartment that becomes unbearably hot in summer. They installed a portable AC unit, but opening windows for fresh air at night lets in street noise and negates the cooling. After installing the VT501, they keep windows closed, run the AC less frequently, and wake up to fresh, cool air every morning. Their electricity bill dropped noticeably.

Scenario 2 — A London Terraced House:
A family with two children, one with asthma, struggled with summer pollen and poor air quality from a nearby road. Opening windows for ventilation triggered allergic reactions. The VT501’s filtration system now provides continuous clean air without exposure to outdoor allergens. The child’s symptoms improved significantly.

Practical Energy Savings Estimate

Scenario: A 20m² bedroom in a Central European climate (e.g., Germany, Netherlands, Austria). Heating season approximately 200 days/year.

Ventilation MethodEstimated Heat Loss per SeasonAnnual Heating Cost Impact
Opening windows 3× daily, 15 min each~1,200 kWh~€360
VT501 continuous ventilation with 90% heat recovery~120 kWh~€36
Difference~1,080 kWh saved~€324 saved

Estimates based on typical residential heat loss calculations. Actual savings depend on building insulation, local climate, heating system type, and usage patterns.

At a purchase price of €450, the unit can pay for itself within approximately 1.5 heating seasons through reduced energy waste alone.

Common Questions from European Customers

Does this meet EU ventilation regulations for residential buildings?
The VT501 is CE and RED certified. For specific national building regulations (e.g., German DIN 1946-6, Dutch Bouwbesluit, UK Building Regulations Part F), consult your local building authority or installer to confirm the VT501 meets the airflow requirements for your specific room size and building type. We provide all technical data needed for compliance verification.

Can I install this in a listed/heritage building?
The only external modification is a 163mm circular opening with a flush weather grille. This is significantly less invasive than ducted systems. However, listed building consent may still be required — check with your local planning authority.

What about condensation and rain ingress?
The duct is installed at a slight downward angle toward the exterior. The outer weather grille prevents rain entry. The ceramic core naturally manages moisture during the heat exchange cycle. In extremely cold conditions (below −10°C), the auto-cycle mode prevents ice formation on the ceramic core.

How loud is it really?
At Sleep mode: ≤30 dB(A). For reference, a quiet library is approximately 30 dB(A), and a whisper at 1 metre is approximately 20 dB(A). At Sleep speed, most users report that the unit is inaudible from bed at normal room distances.

How long do filters last?
Depends entirely on your local air quality. In a typical European urban environment, expect 3 – 6 months per filter set. Rural environments with clean air may extend this. The WiFi model can alert you when filters need attention.

Can I use this for cooling in summer?
The VT501 is not an air conditioning unit — it does not actively cool air. However, during summer, it recovers coolness from outgoing conditioned air (if you use AC) and pre-cools incoming air, reducing your AC workload. It also enables effective night purge ventilation — drawing in cool night air to pre-cool rooms before daytime heat.
